Engine oil works harder than most drivers realise. Beyond lubricating moving parts, it fights wear, keeps components clean and supports the overall efficiency of your engine. What happens during oxidation?
Oxidation is a chemical reaction between oil molecules and oxygen. It generates acids that can attack metal surfaces, along with sludge and varnish that leave sticky deposits throughout the engine. The reaction also creates aggressive by-products such as peroxides and aldehydes, which break the oil down even further. As these by-products accumulate, they gradually change the structure of the oil itself — and that's the point where thickening begins.
Why thicker oil is a problem
As oxidation advances, heavier compounds and polymerised molecules build up in the oil, raising its resistance to flow. The oil becomes more viscous, circulates more slowly and struggles to reach tight clearances quickly enough — especially at cold starts. The consequences: compromised lubrication, accelerated wear and often higher fuel consumption. An oil thickened by oxidation simply can't deliver its designed level of protection anymore.

Choose a high-quality engine oil formulated with strong antioxidant additives: it resists oxidation longer and keeps its viscosity stable over time. In demanding conditions, shortening the oil change interval and avoiding excessive idling or repeated very short trips also helps slow the ageing process. And in every case: follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for both the correct oil grade and the right drain interval.
